MONTEREY, California (KSBW) — Carmella Cuva has never missed a Monterey Bay Half Marathon and 2022 was no exception despite facing a medical emergency months earlier. On January 11, 2022, Cuva suffered a brain stroke and lost her ability to walk, talk and eat.

“To come from a place where I had to learn just how to sit down to running tomorrow. I’m thankful. It’s like walking through amazing grace really, it’s miraculous really,” says Cuva.

Cuva defied all odds on Sunday and ran the Monterey Bay Half Marathon. She finished the race in two hours, 32 minutes and 50 seconds, according to official race results. Cuva says her sights are now set on the Big Sur International Marathon in April 2023.

“It says in God’s word that all things are possible. But when all things are possible it’s through grace. You can walk through. And there’s a thankfulness of just grace to accomplish things. And I don’t want to forget to give credit where credit is due and that’s to God,” said Cuva.

Cuva says she is doing much better all thanks to the support from her family and community.
