An Arizona judge helped revive an 1864 abortion law. His lawmaker wife joined Democrats to repeal it

Arizona Supreme Court Justice Clint Bolick sided with the majority in restoring an 1864 ban on nearly all abortions. Republican state Sen. Shawnna Bolick joined Democrats to repeal the ban a few weeks later. The marked split between the husband and wife adds to an increasingly confusing and chaotic legal and philosophical landscape surrounding abortion access in Arizona. And it could spell trouble for them during an election year, when both of them will be on the ballot. The Bolicks’ conservative credentials are strong, but this hasn’t shielded them from criticism from the right and the left over the law’s revival and repeal.
