Burkina Faso authorities say 70 people, mostly children and elderly, slain in village massacre

OUAGADOUGOU, Burkina Faso (AP) — Authorities in Burkina Faso say about 70 people were killed when assailants attacked a village in the country’s volatile north. The announcement from Prosecutor Simon B. Gnanou on Monday comes more than a week after the community was attacked and homes were burned. On Sunday, the European Union said it believed nearly 100 people had been killed in the massacre that took place in the village of Zaongo. Burkina Faso has been grappling with a jihadi insurgency linked to al-Qaida and the Islamic State group for years. Thousands of people have been killed and more than 2 million internally displaced in the West African nation.
