A look at the uranium-based ammunition the US is sending to Ukraine

WASHINGTON (AP) — A Kremlin spokesman says the U.S. decision to supply depleted uranium ammunition to Ukraine is “very bad news.” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov claims the ammunition’s use by the U.S. in the former Yugoslavia caused cancers and other illnesses. The United States said Wednesday it’s sending depleted uranium anti-tank rounds to Ukraine, following Britain’s lead in sending the munitions to help Kyiv fight Russia’s invasion. Depleted uranium is a byproduct of the uranium enrichment process needed to create nuclear weapons but cannot generate a nuclear reaction. The U.S. military says it has not found a higher risk of cancers or other illnesses in servicemembers who were exposed to it.
