MU officials working to help those affected by flooding

The University of Missouri Extension Office is reaching out to help communities hurt by flooding across the state.

MU Extension officials said they are meeting with organizations like the Red Cross and Flood Plains Management Thursday to go over plans to help those affected by flooding.

Connie Burnham, the emergency management coordinator for MU Extension, said they are able to provide expertise and knowledge to people who have been severely affected by the flooding.

” How do you explain to a child that they may never go back to that home, or the things that they’ve known? ” she said. ” Or that they may not be able to go back there, and they may have to go somewhere else to live? And then they’re going into a different school or even neighborhood maybe? ”

She said they are offering an emergency preparedness guide to those who have to go through the flooding events in many parts of the state.

Officials recommend having an evacuation plan, moving to high ground when flood waters rise, and shutting off utilities when flooding is imminent.
