Flooding in St. Joseph starts to subside
Parts of St. Joseph are now starting to emerge from waters that covered areas next to the river.
Walkways, a gazebo, benches, trash cans and more at the St. Joseph Riverwalk started peeking out of the water.
Most of the riverwalk was underwater Friday when the water levels reached a record high. Several areas evacuated during the record high, including parts of St. Joseph and the town of Elwood, Kansas.
Sunday, the National Weather Service recorded the water level on the Missouri River at 29.6 feet .
Doniphan County, Kansas emergency management said residents of Elwood should be able to return home once the water level hits 29 feet and falling.
The river should drop into the moderate flooding stage by Monday.
Meteorologists are still not sure when the river will return to its normal level, but it should get into the minor flooding stage by the end of the month.
Residents of St. Joseph who evacuated have since been able to return home.
