Smithton Middle School evacuated for gas odor

Smithton Middle School students were evacuated Thursday morning after reports of a possible gas odor.

Emergency officials were investigating the situation Thursday and determined it to be a false alarm, Columbia Fire Department officials said.

All students were reported safe, and parents were notified of the incident through a text message, said Columbia Public Schools spokeswoman, Michelle Baumstark.

Officials gave the all clear, and students returned to class within 15 minutes.
