EXCLUSIVE: Off-duty police chief recounts breaking up Jefferson City brawl
A 45-year-old man is facing possible charges for unlawful use of a weapon while intoxicated after a fight broke out inside Spectators Bar & Grill on Jefferson City’s High Street.
Jared Bown was arrested shortly before 1 a.m. on March 7.
Brown was sitting at the bar on the ground floor of the restaurant, near Brian Phillips, who was the other subject involved in the fight, according to the Jefferson City Police Department’s incident report.
Witness statements and video of the incident shows Brown began arguing over money with Phillips, threatened him and the confrontation became violent.
The fight went to the ground, at which point Daniel Clayton, police chief of Ferrelview, who was off-duty at the time, stepped in and broke up the fight.
Clayton noticed a gun on the ground that he said Brown dropped.
Brown later told police in an interview that he had been carrying the gun for protection, citing threats to his life associated with his role as chief of staff to State Senator Justin Brown.
Clayton told his story in a phone interview with ABC 17 News.
