High winds blow down four power lines in Columbia

A power outage was affecting a large swath of northeast Columbia on Wednesday afternoon.

According to Columbia Water and Light spokeswoman Lissie Wade, high winds caused power outages across the city.

Columbia firefighters were on scene for a few hours because there was a fire just a few yards away, but it was likely not connected with the utility poles incident. Division Chief Clayton Farr told ABC 17 News that no one was hurt.

The Columbia Water and Light outage map showed more than 1,200 electric customers without power just before 5 p.m. along Paris Road and Highway 63, including parts of Mexico Gravel Road, Clark Lane and Vandiver Drive. Most of those customers have had their power turned back on. As of 10:30 p.m., only 36 people were affected.

Boone Electric Cooperative also reported 80 customers without power near the Water and Light outage. A Boone spokeswoman said four city electric poles were broken along Mexico Gravel Road and the cooperative shares those poles with the city. Boone tweeted that it had to wait for Water and Light crews to make their repairs before they could make theirs. At last check, Boone Electric customers could be out until 4 a.m.

Crews were still on scene repairing the lines and poles at 10:00 p.m.

All customers had power restored by Thursday morning.
