St. Charles man identified in Montgomery County chase

A pursuit stemming from the St. Charles area ended when the driver died by suicide in Montgomery County on Tuesday afternoon.

Travis J. Mackey, 35, of St. Charles, was armed with two guns when he led deputies on a chase that was headed west on Interstate 70 just before 4 p.m., the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release

Mackey was wanted by the St. Charles Police Department for suspicion of aggravated stalking and resisting arrest, according to the release.

Deputies intercepted the pursuit near the 175 mile marker, and authorities said the suspect’s vehicle struck a deputy’s vehicle, went off the road and came to a stop in the median between I-70 and the North Service Road.

The driver shot himself as deputies approached the vehicle, the news release said.

The Montgomery County coroner pronounced the driver dead at 4:30 p.m.

The sheriff’s office said it has requested the Missouri State Highway Patrol Division of Drug and Crime Control to investigate the incident.
