Jefferson City standoff ends in arrest

Police arrested a 30-year-old man Tuesday after a standoff in a south Jefferson City neighborhood that lasted more than 40 minutes.

Police were looking for a suspect in a weapons offense that happened late Monday and determined the man was in a home in the 300 block of Hickory Street, the Jefferson City Police Department said in a news release. A person who had left the residence cofirmed the suspect’s identity and told police he was armed, the department said.

The man refused an officer’s commands to exit the home and crisis negotiators and the SWAT team were called in, police said. Several neighbors were also removed from their homes as a safety precaution. The man left the home and was arrested after about 40 minutes of negotiations and officers found the handgun police believe was used in the Monday incident, according to the release.

The police department said no other information would be relased pending the filing of criminal charges.
