Suspect in deadly Columbia crash turns himself in

The 20-year-old accused of causing a deadly crash that killed Jordan Hoyt has turned himself in to Columbia police.

Lukas S. Evans arrived at the Columbia Police Department around 8:45 p.m. Sunday.

“I wanted to apologize to Jordan’s family about everything that has happened,” Evans told ABC 17 News as he turned himself in.

Evans faces charges of second-degree murder and leaving the scene of an accident in a crash that killed Hoyt, 37, on Feb. 16 on West Boulevard. Columbia police said Evans was speeding from the scene of a crash at Stadium Boulevard and West Boulevard when he hit Hoyt head-on.

Columbia police estimated the damage of the first crash at more than $4,300, making it qualify for a felony leaving the scene of an accident charge. Evans passed a car on West Boulevard in a no-passing zone before hitting Hoyt, police said.

A judge set his bond at $1 million cash-only. He remained in the Boone County Jail on Monday.
