Cole County leaders talk long-range facility needs

Cole County commissioners met with the head of each department Thursday afternoon to discuss what budget items they want or need in the near future.

The commissioner took notes as Sheriff John Wheeler, Health Department director Kristi Campbell, Cole County Clerk Steve Korsmeyer and many others presented a “wish list” of the additional staff, office space or other resources that would streamline their departments.

Division II Judge Jon Beetem attended the meeting to represent the county’s court system.

The county will be assigned a fifth associate circuit judge in 2021, and will thus need to plan for the construction of a new courtroom.

Beetem told commissioners the new facility will need to include a jury box and seating for at least 100.

Commissioners also discussed the future of the old health department facility on Industrial Drive after that department vacated it for the new building on West Truman Boulevard.

All of the recomendations presented Thursday will be taken into consideration during the next county budget cycle.
