BOONE COUNTY, Mo. (KMIZ)

A crash that bogged down westbound Interstate 70 at the Missouri River bridge happened when a vehicle rear-ended another, causing a chain reaction.

The crash, which temporarily shut down the road, happened as traffic was slowed down because of a stranded motorist, the Missouri State Highway Patrol reported. Traffic was initially at a standstill but continued to move slowly for hours.

The Boone County Fire Protection District shared on Twitter that crews responded to the crash around 2:20 p.m.

Four vehicles were involved and one person was taken to a hospital with minor injuries, a Boone County Fire Protection District spokesman said. Three vehicles had to be towed away.

An earlier crash a few miles down the road also led to significant traffic backups and closed I-70 temporarily.
