WATCH: Ceremony marks site of Boone County lynching

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

People gathered Wednesday outside the Boone County Courthouse to honor the victim of an 1889 lynching.

The Community Remembrance Project (CRP) of Boone County organized the ceremony to collect soil at the site of George Bush's Sept. 7, 1889, lynching. Boone County and Columbia leaders were among the speakers. Afterward, attendees were invited to add soil to the three collection jars.

One jar will go to the Legacy Museum in Montgomery, Alabama. Another will be displayed in the Boone County Courthouse. The third will be displayed at the Black Archives of Mid Missouri in Kansas City.

Bush, who was in his late teens at the time of his death, was lynched by a mob of white men from the railing of a courthouse window, the Community Remembrance Project said in a news release.
