ORIGINAL

A multiple car pileup was expected to cause a three-hour backup on Route 54 Friday.

The crash originally happened on westbound 54 west of Highway 17 near Opie Road around 1:30 p.m, according to MoDOT.

Sgt. Scott White with the Missouri State Highway Patrol Troop F said the preliminary estimate is that 50 vehicles are involved in crashes or slideoffs in the same general area.

MoDOT estimated westbound 54 would be closed for a minimum of three hours. The agency said crews will need to clear the vehicles and clear the road, while emergency medical services treat anyone with injuries.
