Jefferson City man charged with six felonies after accidental shooting
JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (KMIZ)
A Jefferson City man who told deputies that he accidentally shot himself has been charged with six felonies in Cole County.
Forrest M. Hoppe is charged with attempted second-degree domestic assault, three counts of armed criminal action and two counts of unlawful use of a weapon in connection with the Sunday incident on Randall Drive, which is outside the city limits.
Police were sent to the address Sunday afternoon and found Hoppe suffering from a gunshot wound, according to a probable cause statement. Hoppe and the victim, who lives in the house with Hoppe, got into an argument during which Hoppe pulled out a pistol, the statement says.
Hoppe dropped the pistol as he was getting out of a vehicle and the two scuffled over it, investigators say. That's when the gun went off, hitting Hoppe in the upper thigh area, according to the statement.
Hoppe reportedly told paramedics that he had been drinking.
The statement filed in the case says Hoppe has a long criminal history including domestic assault, rape, sexual assault, unlawful use of a weapon and child endangerment. A similar incident happened in December and Hoppe was taken into custody for a temporary mental health hold, the statement says.
An initial hearing was set for Wednesday afternoon. Hoppe remained in the Cole County Jail on Wednesday without bond.
