Slippery roadways are expected this afternoon and evening
FRIDAY: Winter weather is returning to Mid-Missouri, and we’re feeling evidence of that already. Wind chills in the single digits this morning will improve slightly as winds back off today, with highs reaching the low 20s. But a more visible return to winter weather comes as snow moves in later this morning into this afternoon. Light to moderate bands of snow will increase from west to east after 8 AM, becoming widespread in the afternoon. Before moving out this evening, we’re expecting some light accumulations, but with the timing of this system being so, expect a slippery afternoon and evening commute before roadways improve. We could also see some freezing rain mixing in with the snow south of HWY 50 with up to a tenth of an inch of ice possible. On average, most areas will see 2-3″, with some areas picking up to 5″, with highest totals west of HWY 63.
TONIGHT: Snow will move be tapering off in the evening, but we hang on to mostly cloudy skies overnight. Temperatures will dip slightly into the low to mid teens once again, with northeasterly winds creating wind chills in the single digits for Saturday morning.
EXTENDED: We get a break during the day on Saturday, with dry weather and temperatures making it to the low 30s, but it won’t be long-lived. Another disturbance moves in Saturday night into Sunday morning, bringing an additional chance of light accumulating snow. This second batch looks even lighter than the first, with accumulations topping out around 1″, mainly north of I-70. Temperatures will stay below average for much of the next week as this unsettled pattern delivers reinforcing shots of cold air. Our next chance of snow moves in by late Tuesday.
