CPS, JCPS leaders lobby state government for local control

Leaders of local school boards said Monday that they stressed the need for districts to make decisions locally instead of receiving statewide mandates.

School board members and administrators from across the state gathered in Jefferson City for the Missouri School Boards’ Association legislative forum.

The district representatives heard from speakers including Gov. Mike Parson, Commissioner of Education Margie Vandeven and State Board of Education President Charlie Shields.

School choice, workforce development, school safety and funding were among the topics discussed during the day-long forum.

Representatives from Columbia Public Schools were in attendance, including board president Jan Mees, Superintendent Peter Steiplemen and board member Jonathan Sessions.

Jefferson City Public Schools board of education President Steve Bruce was also in attendence.

Both Sessions and Bruce told ABC 17 News that their districts prioritized maintaining local control in their discussions with state legislators.

A student showcase was on display at the Missouri Capitol building Wednesday.
