Unsettled weather pattern returns through the middle of this week
MONDAY: After a mild start to the morning falling temperatures will bring a chilly evening commute. This comes as a cold front tracks through the region. The frontal passage will be dry, but it is still a strong boundary as breezy winds pick up out of the northwest ushering in much colder air. Temperatures during the afternoon will quickly fall into the 40s, with winds shifting out of the west/northwest up to 14 mph. This will open the door for wind chill values to fall into the upper 30s by the evening commute.
TONIGHT: Clouds will clear tonight behind the cold front as temperatures drop steadily through the night. Overnight lows will be back in the mid 20s. With a steady breeze out of the northeast wind chills will be in the mid teens for the morning commute. Have the winter gear on standby!
EXTENDED: An unsettled weather patter moves in Tuesday with a chance of light rain courtesy of a lingering boundary. It’s possible that with freezing temperatures at the surface and warmer air aloft, that a brief chance for freezing rain will occur at the onset of precipitation Tuesday. The better chance of freezing rain through the early part of Tuesday is north of I-70. While the threat is small, it does exist. Warmer air moving in will gradually lead to an all rain event Tuesday. Ice accumulation doesn’t look likely. It’s quite possible a few scattered thunderstorms could be embedded within the rain showers, but no severe weather is expected. The nearly stationary boundary will remain across Mid-Missouri for several days, with upper level disturbances tracking through. This will lead to a multi-day rain event with possible flooding near I-44 where areas could see upwards of 2 inches of rain through Thursday. While rain will be the main precip type, we could tap into enough cold air as the system tracks out of Mid-Missouri Thursday that could yield some wintry precipitation. While it’s still several days out, the trends continue to suggest we’ll see some form of wintry precipitation. Behind the front, expect temperatures to drastically cool off, with overnight lows dipping into the teens and afternoon highs by Friday climbing into the lower 20s.
