State lawmakers may draft legislation condemning NCAA
Columbia Sen. Caleb Rowden said Friday that he and other state lawmakers are exploring possible legislative action officially condemning the NCAA over its controversial postseason ban of three University of Missouri sports teams.
“People may say this is just sport, but there’s a huge economic impact for this community and our state,” Rowden said. “Mizzou football, baseball and softball provides economic stimulus that is obviously very important to this community.”
The state Senate majority leader told ABC 17 News he believes a joint resolution condemning the NCAA’s ruling would easily be backed with bi-partisan support.
While it would have little impact on the pending appeal process, Rowden said it would be an important statement of disapproval.
“There are a number of different avenues we can take,” Rowden said. “We want to make sure people know that this is a bigger deal than just college sports.”
Many other Missouri lawmakers have issued statements since Thursday reacting to NCAA’s ruling.

From the NCAA’s own report, it was clear that the university was transparent and did the right thing by reporting both the tutor’s actions and the involvement of a small number of players. I stand with Chancellor Cartwright, Athletic Director Jim Sterk, and the Mizzou family in questioning the fairness of these overly punitive sanctions.
