The Kewpies season-opener ended in 28-point shut out loss to North Kansas and head coach Cedric Alvis said he saw some glimpses of what the season could turn into.
"In turn of play making ability, I think we saw some glimpses of some guys that can really make some plays and the potential for what guys can do for us in the future," Alvis said. "Defensively what we were able to do against the run and how physical we were, I think that's going to help us out throughout the season."

As Alvis says his guys are working on finding what works for them, he says he's hoping his team can challenge Helias' sound and disciplined team this week to put them in positions where they may have to stretch.
"Helias is disciplined. They don't beat themselves. They don't make many mistakes. Offensively they're going to take what they can get and figure out where our weak spots are and exploit it," Alvis said. "On the defensive side, they're physical. They're going to give us a lot of action so our kids have to be ready to pick up the pressure and be ready to handle that."
On flip side, Helias came out on the other side of week one with a 31-21 win over Hannibal. Head coach Chris Hentges says he was impressed with what his team brought to the opener.
"Anytime you can go on the road and beat your rival at their place, they're coming off of a state finalist appearance last year and I thought our boys responded really well going on the road against a tough opponent," Hentges said.

Hentges said as starting quarterback Drew Miller is now in his second season with the Crusaders, he has seen a lot of maturity in his game.
"He was much more relaxed and I saw him back bounce a lot better from mistakes that he made and that's a sign of a quarterback that can make a bad play but forget it and come back out the next series and perform well," Hentges said.
Helias and Hickman will kick off at 7 p.m. on Friday night at Hickman High School.
