Dangerous cold through the middle of the week
MONDAY: Cloudy skies and light rain showers will occur through the morning commute, with temperatures holding steady in the mid to upper 30s. Once the cold front tracks through Mid-Missouri this morning, temperatures will rapidly fall through the day with any remaining rain transitioning into a wintry mix. Little to no accumulation is expected with any areas that do see a wintry mix, with any precipitation coming to an end by the early afternoon. Temperatures will quickly fall behind the front, with many areas in the teens by 5 PM. It’ll feel colder though, with winds out of the northwest up to 24 mph and gusting as high as 30 mph.
TONIGHT: It will be a dangerously cold night ahead as temperatures drop into the single digits with wind chills below zero. Skies will clear with northwesterly winds up to 21 mph with gust up to 35+ mph. This will create for a blustery morning with several layers needed with feels like temps down to -5 to -10. Make sure you cover any exposed skin and limit your time outside.
EXTENDED: Even colder conditions are expected through the middle of the week, as a secondary cold front tracks through Mid-Missouri. Some light snow showers are possible into Tuesday evening, but the biggest concern is the dangerous cold that filters into Mid-Missouri. Overnight lows Tuesday will fall to near -5 for a large portion of Mid-Missouri, with even colder wind chill values. A Wind Chill Watch is in effect for mid-Missouri starting Tuesday night through Thursday morning. Many locations will experience wind chill readings Tuesday night into Wednesday morning anywhere from -20 to -30. Wind chill readings this low will allow for frostbite to occur within 30 minutes. Thankfully, the bitter cold will be short-lived, albeit dangerous. The rest of the week will see a slow warming trend, with afternoon highs approaching the mid 40s by Saturday.
