Coldest air of the season arrives this week
TONIGHT: It will be a chilly night across Mid-Missouri, with steadily increasing clouds. This comes ahead of a cold front that will track into Mid-Missouri into Monday morning. Cloudy skies will hold temperatures in the mid 30s tonight, with winds out of the west/southwest up to 20 mph. We could see gusts as high as 27 through the night. Isolated showers are possible after 3 AM, but a better chance of rain holds off until Monday morning.
MONDAY: Cloudy skies and light rain showers will occur through the morning commute, with temperatures holding steady in the mid to upper 30s. Once the cold front tracks through Mid-Missouri tomorrow morning, temperatures will rapidly fall through the day with any remaining rain transitioning into a wintry mix. Little to no accumulation is expected with any areas that do see a wintry mix, with any precipitation coming to an end by the early afternoon. Temperatures will quickly fall behind the front, with many areas in the teens by 5 PM. It’ll feel colder though, with winds out of the northwest up to 24 mph and gusting as high as 30 mph. Overnight lows Monday will fall into the single digits.
EXTENDED: Even colder conditions are expected through the middle of the week, as a secondary cold front tracks through Mid-Missouri. Some light snow showers are possible into Tuesday evening, but the biggest concern is the dangerous cold that filters into Mid-Missouri. Overnight lows Tuesday will fall to near -5 for a large portion of Mid-Missouri, with een colder wind chill values. Many locations will experience wind chill readings Tuesday night into Wednesday morning anywhere from -20 to -30. Wind chill readings this low will allow for frostbite to occur within 30 minutes. Thankfully, the bitter cold will be short-lived, albeit dangerous. The rest of the week will see a slow warming trend, with afternoon highs approaching the mid 40s by Saturday.
