Cold rain and gusty winds today; Arctic air tomorrow
TODAY: Temperatures have slowly been warming through the night, thanks to our breezy southeasterly winds. Temperatures this morning are hovering near 30 degrees, with temperatures expected to continue to rise through the day. If patchy drizzle occurs this morning, there will be a brief period for it to freeze until temperatures climb above freezing. It’s possibly that most locations will be above the freezing mark by 8 AM, with a cold rain to occur after that. Temperatures today top out near 44 degrees with winds out of the southwest up to 20 mph and gusts as high as 26. Even though rain will be our dominant precipitation type today, be cautious on roadways, as slick spots could still develop.
TONIGHT: A strong cold front will track through Mid-Missouri this evening bringing the return subfreezing temperatures. While the bulk of the precipitiation will be to the east of the cold front, there is a small window of time where freezing rain/wintry mix could fall. Any freezing rain will amount to a glaze with slick spots likely to develop. As the cold front tracks through the rain will slowly end behind it, with most locations dry by 4 AM, with overnight lows bottoming out near 20 degrees. It’ll feel more like the single digits tomorrow morning, with winds shifting out of the northwest and gusting up to 26 mph.
EXTENDED: We’ll see a mix of sun and clouds Wednesday as temperatures fight to make it back to freezing in the afternoon. A cold front swings through on Thursday, giving us a slight chance of snow in Mid-Missouri and pushing temperatures back into the single digits overnight Thursday. A northwesterly air flow aloft will drive upper level waves and reinforcing shots of arctic air into the region from Friday through next Monday. With these, brief periods of light snow are possible but moisture will be limited. If snow does develop with any of these waves, it would be light with only minor accumulation. We will stay below freezing from Friday through next Monday with days in the 20s and nights in the teens. Stick with ABC 17 on-air and online for the newest information.
