Icy conditions cause dangerous outdoor surfaces
Nearly 17 inches of snow has fallen in Columbia in the new year. Snowfall, mixed with frigid temperatures, caused icy roads and sidewalks across the city on Monday.
The Boone Hospital Center said it’s seen more than 20 weather-related falls since Friday.
Billy Breuklander with Voss Land and Tree said it’s important to clear sidewalks and be sure to use the right kind of salt when you do.
“Not all salt works, I mean it varies with the temperature,” he said.
Breuklander also said it’s important to use the right amount of salt.
“I would recommend an even, smooth layer. I mean you use too little you’re not going to get the effective result you’re looking for. You use too much and you’re just using excess salt,” he said.
Columbia Public Works urges residents to clear the sidewalks on and around their property of all snow and ice. The department said on its website not only is it the neighborly thing to do, but it is also a city ordinance.
According to C ity of Columbia Code of Ordinances 24-12, “a ll persons are hereby required to keep the sidewalks in front of, or adjacent to, the property or premises owned or occupied by them or under their control, within the city, clear and free from rubbish, filth, refuse, dirt, snow, ice and from any and all obstructions and dangerous agencies of every kind and description whatsoever.”
The penalty for violation is a fine of up to $550 per day until the sidewalk is cleared.
