Mid-Missouri Business Week: New heart procedure to bring more patients to Boone Hospital

The Boone Hospital Center is the first hospital in mid-Missouri to offer a new procedure that allows the patient to avoid open-heart surgery.

Dr. Mozow Zuidema, with the Missouri Heart Center, said the MitraClip procedure involves using a clip that doctors insert through catheters, via a vein in the leg, up to the heart. The doctors then clip the mitral valve leaflets, so the mitral valve can close properly. Once the procedure is completed, normal blood flow would be restored to the heart.

Zuidema said the procedure is less invasive than opening the chest, stopping the heart and replacing the valve.

The procedure could benefit mid-Missouri economically because patients can get the procedure locally and not have to travel, and more doctors could be recruited with the new innovation available.
