Some MU students rush to beat snow

Some University of Missouri students are coming back to Columbia early to avoid being caught in a winter storm.

MU classes are starting next week, but the campus opened early this week to accommodate students wanting to come back early.

ABC 17 Stormtrack meteorologists say snow is possible in mid-Missouri starting Friday night and is expected to continue into Saturday. Cold will sweep in after the snow. This comes after piles of snow left on the ground from a storm last weekend.

MU senior Victoria McGlinn said she had originally planned to come back on Saturday, but now she is leaving Friday.

“I’m missing my sister’s birthday party,” McGlinn said.

But she has to drive from Chicago, and she said she would rather arrive to campus safely. Her family had even gotten her car tuned up before she left just in case.

“I just want to get there and be able to settle in,” she said.

Another MU student said he is also coming back Friday. Ian Cirenza said he had originally planned a ski trip, but he is cutting it short so he can fly back safely

MU News Bureau Director Christian Basi said MU is encouraging students to get to campus early. They opened the residence halls a day early in case students wanted to start traveling back to Columbia.

“We just want everyone to have a safe experience this weekend,” Basi said.
