Democratic lawmakers respond to State of the State

Missouri Senate Minority Leader Gina Walsh urged the majority party not to take action against voter-approved initiatives in the Democratic response to Gov. Mike Parson’s State of the State address Wednesday.

Walsh used former Gov. Eric Greitens as an example of the Republican Party’s track record in the General Assembly.

“Now, with a new Governor, it is our hope that those old problems are behind us, but simply being better than Eric Greitens is too low a bar to set for any of our leaders,” said Walsh, D-Bellefontaine Neighbors. “Being done with a bad politician isn’t enough if his bad policies remain.”

Walsh urged Republican lawmakers to refrain from dismantling certain initiatives that were on recent statewide ballots including the rejection of a so-called right-to-work law, the constitutional amendment known as Clean Missouri and the legalization of medical marijuana.

Among the provision of Clean Missouri are a ban on lobbyist gifts to lawmakers and a new process for drawing state legislative districts. Republicans have been especially critical of the redistricting provision, saying it was created to benefit Democrats.
