Jefferson City mayor, Columbia school board races contested

Jefferson City Mayor Carrie Tergin will face an opponent in the April election.

Tergin, who has served one term, will face Tiwan Lewis. Lewis filed for the seat Monday. No city council members in Jefferson City will run opposed in the April 2 election.

Lewis said she decided to run for mayor after experiencing homelessness. She graduated from Lincoln University and owns a catering company, she said. Lewis said her experience with poverty and working low-paying jobs has given her real-world experience that would be valuable as mayor.

Two candidates filed for city prosecutor, Gaylin Carver and Scott Evans, and three filed for municipal judge, Brian K. Stumpe, Angela Silvey and Tim Anderson.

Four candidates put in their names for two seats on the Columbia Board of Education before filing ended at 5 p.m. Tuesday, but the two incumbents did not. Della Streaty-Wilhoit, Brian Jones, Blake Willoughby and Jay Atkins filed for the two seats before filing ended. Incumbents Jan Meese, the current board president, and Jim Whitt will not seek another three-year term.
