Winter storm moves in Friday

A WINTER STORM WARNING HAS BEEN ISSUED FOR ALL COUNTIES IN MID-MISSOURI EXCEPT CHARITON, SALINE AND BENTON COUNTIES. THE WARNING GOES IN EFFECT FRIDAY AT 12 PM UNTIL EARLY SUNDAY MORNING. A SNOW ADVISORY FOR CHARITON, SALINE AND BENTON IS IN EFFECT FROM 3 PM FRIDAY TO 6 PM SATURDAY.

TONIGHT: Thick clouds build in from the southwest tonight as moisture quickly begins to stream into the region. With the cloud coverage in place, lows tonight won’t be as cold. It’ll still be chilly with overnight lows bottoming out in the upper 20s to near 30, with winds chills in the low to mid 20s by morning.

FRIDAY: A winter storm is developing for Friday and will send moisture into mid-Missouri during the day Friday as temperatures reach the mid to upper 30s. At this time, it looks like it will start as a mix of rain, sleet and snow which will increase after 10 AM Friday from the southwest and change to all snow by late afternoon and evening as it spreads east through the evening. Snow will be heavy at times and could reduce visibility greatly across eastern parts of Mid-Missouri. Temperatures will fall to near freezing by Friday evening and snow will begin to stick to untreated roads with accumulation overnight, causing slow travel. Total snow amounts of 4-9 inches are expected with lowest totals west from near HWY 65 to Kansas City and higher amounts east of HWY 63.

EXTENDED: Snow will become lighter through the day Saturday and taper off to light snow showers Saturday night into Sunday morning as clouds persist. High temperatures will hover near the freezing mark Saturday, dropping to the upper 20s Saturday night. Sunday will still be cold, reaching the mid 30s with snow flurries ending. We’ll slowly warm next week, reaching the mid 40s by Tuesday. Another cold front drops in Wednesday, cooling us back into the 30s by next Thursday. At this time the moisture looks limited with this front but some very light rain or wintry mix can’t be completely ruled out late Wednesday.
