Rainy end to 2018, cold start to 2019
NEW YEARS EVE: It will be a rainy and cool start to New Years Eve, with temperatures slow to rise through the day. Widespread light rain is expected through most of the day with many areas seeing upwards of 1-1.5″ of rain. The heaviest rainfall amounts look to be along and south of I-70. Little flooding problems exist, as the rain will be steady and fall through most of the day. Highs top out near 40 degrees tomorrow, with winds gradually shifting around out of the west up to 13 mph. Rain will come to an end early evening, in time for any New Years Eve festivities, but a few snowflakes can’t be ruled out.
TONIGHT: In the wake of rainfall from today clouds will stick around mid-Missouri tonight, but we will be mostly dry. Isolated flurries can’t be ruled out into this evening as temperatures dip back below freezing. Bundle up if you’re heading out to celebrate the New Year. As the clock strikes midnight temperatures will be close to freezing with wind chills in the mid 20s. By morning temperatures will be in the mid 20s. Wind chills for the early part of the day tomorrow will be in the teens thanks to steady northwesterly winds up to 13 mph.
EXTENDED: A cold front will track through Mid-Missouri as we head into the start of a New Year, with temperatures struggling to climb into the lower 30s as we head through New Years Day. Cloudy skies will also be stubborn to erode, with little to no sunshine expected through most of New Years. However, a warming trend will slowly take hold as we head into the middle of this week, with temperatures topping out near 40 degrees as we head into Thursday. Models are hinting at a chance for winter weather as we head into Thursday, but the confidence is fairly low. As of now there is a chance for light snow showers early Thursday, but that could change as the we grow closer to the end of the week. Sunshine returns as we head into next week with highs topping out in the upper 40s to near 50s. Watch ABC 17 News for the latest on the upcoming changes and check back here for updates.
