Trial dates continued for defendants in Carl DeBrodie case

Two women charged with crimes in connection with the death and disappearance of disabled man Carl DeBrodie were granted continuances Monday during pretrial conferences at the Callaway County Courthouse.

Sherry Paulo’s jury trial scheduled for Wednesday is canceled and now a trial setting is set for Dec. 24. She is charged with involuntary manslaughter, neglect, abandonment of a corpse and two misdemeanor counts of making a false report of a missing person.

Mary Paulo’s jury trial scheduled for Thursday is canceled and a trial setting is also scheduled for Dec. 24 in her case. She faces a misdemeanor charge of making a false report of a missing person.

The pair’s original trial dates were scheduled for August 2018 but proceedings have been delayed multiple times.

The investigation into DeBrodie’s death was launched in April 2017 after his body was found encased in concrete in a Fulton storage unit. A federal judge earlier this month approved a settlement in a civil case over DeBrodie’s death brought by his mother, Carolyn Summers.

The lawsuit claims employees of the group home where DeBrodie lived forced him to fight others for the workers’ entertainment.
