State reminds hunters to get deer checked

The Missouri Department of Conservation is reminding area deer hunters to get their kills checked for a deadly disease.

Firearms season begins Saturday, and deer hunters in Cole and Moniteau counties must get their kills tested for chronic wasting disease, a fatal neurological disease that affects cervids. Hunters in other mid-Missouri counties, including Boone, can have their kills voluntarily tested.

The testing is part of a program to stop the disease’s spread and preserve the state’s deer population.
