Jefferson City water service restored

A water utility has restored service to a large area of Jefferson City after two main breaks left 5,500 customers with little or no water.

According to Missouri American Water officials, one 12-inch water main broke Tuesday. The water main was repaired, but then another 12-inch water main broke on Wednesday morning.

The outage affected customers south of Stadium Boulevard in Jefferson City.

Brent Haas, Missouri American Water operations manager, said all customers were notified.

Customers in the area are on a precautionary water boil advisory, which could be lifted or made mandatory as early as Thursday, Haas said.

“Anytime we lose pressure in the distribution system below 20 psi, we do a precautionary boil advisory for the affected areas,” Haas said. “It’s just a precaution but once water is restored and pressures are back to normal we will do some flushing and sampling.”

Haas said the sampling will come back within 24 hours, which should be Thursday afternoon.

Jefferson City Public Schools spokeswoman Ryan Burns in an email wrote that South and Moreau Heights elementary schools are in the affected area and precautions have been taken to eliminate access to drinking water. Wednesday is an early release day and the district will provide students bottled water until the end of the shortened day, she wrote.

Capital Region Medical Center was also without water due to the main break. The Sam B. Cook Healthplex and Capital Region Physicians – Family Care were closed Wednesday because of the water issue.

Helias Catholic school was also closed Wednesday because of the water main break, which affected one of its buildings.
