Former caregivers join DeBrodie settlement

The couple who cared for a disabled Fulton man found dead in a storage unit last year will be parties to the settlement in a wrongful death case.

Mary and Bryan Martin reached an agreement with Carolyn Summers, mother of Carl DeBrodie, and other plaintiffs in the case seeking damages for his death. DeBrodie’s body was found encased in concrete in a Fulton storage unit in April 2017 after he was reported missing from the Second Chance group home.

DeBrodie, who was developmentally disabled, was a resident of the home. The lawsuit alleges his caretakers at Second Chance forced DeBrodie to fight with another resident for their amusement, contributing to his death.

A settlement in the case was reached last month and a settlement conference is scheduled for Tuesday, according to federal court records.
