CPD evaluates new restraint tool
The Columbia Police Department evaluated a new non-lethal restraint tool Thursday during a demonstration.
The tool, known as BOLAWRAP 100, allows officers to restrain a person who might be trying to hurt themselves or others. CPD met with representatives from Wrap Technologies to discuss the new tool. Police Chief Ken Burton said the tool was designed to get a resisting person to respond to law enforcement without causing pain.
“It’s not pain compliance,” Burton said. “It’s not designed to cause pain. It’s designed to help officers restrain someone that is in crisis, and so it gives officers a few extra seconds.”
The city has not yet decided whether or not to use the BOLAWRAP 100.
