Man sentenced after deadly crash on I-70

A man who pleaded guilty to leaving the scene of an accident with injury and unlawful possession of a firearm was sentenced to nine years in prison last week.

On Oct. 9, William Lauer was sentenced to nine years for unlawful possession and seven years for leaving the scene of an accident, both to be served concurrently.

He was originally charged with involuntary manslaughter after the November crash in the 4600 block of I-70 Drive Southeast killed one person. Two people were also taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries in the crash.

According to the probable cause statement, Lauer told two people that he was the driver and he crashed because he fell asleep at the wheel.

Lauer denied any knowledge of the crash to officers.

After police searched the car, they found a shotgun and several items consistent with methamphetamine use.
