Randolph County murderer scheduled to know his sentence today
On Thursday, a Missouri man is scheduled to be sentenced in Randolph County for a 2013 murder.
Jeffery Nichols is convicted of killing 92-year-old Carmelita Kaser on Easter Sunday back in 2013. Back in June, a jury recommended that Nichols should serve life without parole.
Nichols and another man, Christopher Lewis, stole a “machete-like instrument” from Moberly’s Walmart Supercenter before the murder. Court documents say that both men admitted entering Kaser’s house to steal money. They assaulted her with a “machete-type knife” to her neck, then struck her with the butt of a pistol. The men also robbed Kaser and “left her dead,” before taking her vehicle.
Kaser’s family spoke after the sentencing and thought he deserved a harsher sentence. “No verdict will be able to undo the grave levels of damage that they all experienced. It is, however comforting to know that the jury found Nichols worthy of life in prison, without the possibility of parole,” Emily Doolin, the victim’s granddaughter, told ABC 17 News back in June.
Randolph County Prosecutor Mike Fusselman said the family will have an opportunity to speak again on Thursday, and the judge has ordered a sentencing advisory report.
The sentencing is set for 2:30 p.m. Thursday in Randolph County.
