Neighbors: Columbia shooting scene used to be ‘quiet block’

UPDATE (10/2 4:00 p.m.): Several neighbors said they have noticed crime happening more often on Elm Grove Drive.

“I’ve been here 11 years and it’s a pretty quiet block,” said an Elm Grove Drive resident who asked not to be identified.

She said she suspects rental properties bringing new tenants has led to more crime.

“We have had problems at the end of the block but you can kinda tell where the rentals end and the home ownership begins,” she said.

Detectives and crime scene investigators are working on the incident. No suspect information has been released.

UPDATE (10/2 9:48 a.m.): Officers were sent to the address where the shooting happened about two weeks ago, according to Columbia Police Department dispatch records. Police also responded to a shots-heard call the week before that.

People who live in the neighborhood said it’s typically a quiet place, but that has changed lately.

“It’s really not a bad area, not a bad neighborhood but we’ve had a couple new people and it’s just getting out of hand because we’ve got kids on the block and a lot of kids who play in this area,” resident Brandon Hergins said.

UPDATE (10/2 2:00 a.m.): Columbia police temporarily blocked off a portion of Rice Road late Monday night in connection to the investigation of the shooting on Brown Station Road.

An officer found a vehicle that matched the suspect vehicle description, according to police on scene. Officers reportedly found evidence inside the vehicle that was in plain view. Police were working to obtain a search warrant to search the vehicle.

Police told ABC 17 News they detained four people on scene for questioning. One person was arrested for unrelated charges.

Original story: Columbia police blocked Brown Station Road at Elm Grove Drive to investigate a shooting on Monday night.

A sergeant on scene confirmed a 17-year-old man was transported to the hospital with a gunshot wound. Police said his injuries are not life-threatening.

Two to three homes in the area were struck by gunfire, according to police.

Boone County Joint Communications sent out an alert around 6:30 p.m., notifying drivers to find an alternate route.
