LINCOLN, Maine (WMTW) — A dog helped alert police to a crash on Interstate 95 in Lincoln Sunday evening.

State police say a trooper was parked in a crossover near mile 227 when a dog ran in front of his cruiser. The trooper got out of his cruiser and secured the dog, which was covered in mud and scratches.

The trooper then noticed a man on the side of the southbound side of the highway yelling for help. That’s when the trooper found the crash.

Police say the driver of an SUV told them he fell asleep at the wheel and then rear-ended another SUV that had just entered the highway. Both vehicles then rolled several times. One vehicle ended up on its roof in the road and the other came to rest in a ditch.

It was not clear if anyone in the vehicles was seriously hurt.

Two dogs, including the one that ran to the police cruiser, were thrown from one vehicle. The other dog was finally spotted on a game camera and then caught by someone from Lost Dog Recovery on Wednesday.
