College students concerned after shooting downtown near their apartments

Police are investigating a shooting on College Avenue and Ash Street just before 3 a.m. Sunday.

One man is recovering with a non-life threatening gunshot wound.

Police have not released any suspect information to share at this time and the investigation is ongoing.

Many college students live in apartments near College Avenue and Ash Street.

University of Missouri senior, Dominique Green, said his friends and him heard the gun shots.

“We heard seven shots and it sounded like knocks on the door,” Green said.

MU sophomore, David Orourke, said students should feel safe in their own apartments.

“People have studies to do and they shouldn’t have to worry about gun shots, especially a street away from their housing,” Orourke said.

Students said they were hopeful the gun violence they saw for three back-to-back weekends over the summer in downtown Columbia was over.

On July 29, one shooting was near the intersection of 10th Street and Broadway and another near Williams and Walnut. One man recovered with a gun shot wound.

The following weekend bullets shattered the windows of Midici’s Pizza at the intersection of 10th Street and Broadway. No one was injured.

On Aug 11 officers responded to the corner of 6th Street and Broadway. Police said passengers exchanged gunfire between the two cars.

The Columbia Police Department increased downtown patrols in response to the violence and as college students returned to start the school year.

“It has gotten better since the summer because there are more students and there’s more liability here,” Orourke said. “People are cracking down on it but it still seems like they aren’t cracking down on it enough.”
