UPDATE, 10:27 p.m.: Hurricane Florence has been downgraded to a Category 1 storm, with maximum sustained winds logged at 90 m.p.h. A bulletin from the National Hurricane Center said the storm carried a “life-threatening storm surge.”

ORIGINAL: The outer edge of Hurricane Florence is starting to lash the Southeast, with winds stronger than 80 mph expected along the Carolina coasts by late Thursday afternoon.

The storm is expected to hover over the Carolinas through at least Saturday.

Several local organizations have sent or plan to send personnel to the coast to help with the response to Florence. Thirty-three of the state’s electric cooperatives, including Boone Electric, said today that they’re sending personnel to the South Carolina to help with cleanup. Ameren Missouri is also working on sending crews to the coast.

Earlier this week, urban search and rescue team Missouri Task Force 1 sent dozens of team members to help with Florence-related rescue operations. Members arrived in Brunswick County, N.C., Thursday morning and began planning with local officials. The county is expected to take a direct hit, according to Task Force 1 officials.
