Safe fireworks use requires caution, experts say

Independence Day is just one week away and lighting off fireworks is a popular way to celebrate the holiday -- but it comes with safety hazards.
Fireworks can cause serious injuries and burns if they aren't handled properly.
Safety tips for handling fireworks from the Consumer Product Safety Commission:
- Keep fireworks away from people, pets, other homes and flammable materials.
- Light one firework at a time.
- Keep a safe distance between you and the firework after lighting it.
- Have a bucket of water or fire extinguisher close by.
- Never allow a child to light or handle them.
Weather also plays a factor into safety when lighting fireworks.
The National Weather Service says high wind, low humidity and dry vegetation increase fire danger. Fireworks can contribute to that danger.
The National Weather Service will issue a red flag warning when conditions make fire an extreme danger.
NWS says to extinguish all outdoor fires properly. It's best to drown fires with plenty of water and to dunk charcoal in water until it is cold. Do not throw charcoal on the ground and leave it.
Never leave a fire unattended as sparks and embers can blow into the grass and ignite and fire causing it to spread quickly.
