MoDOT says bridge graffiti now painted over

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (KMIZ)

Graffiti that included references to a white nationalist group on a pedestrian walkway on the Missouri River bridge in Jefferson City has been covered, the Missouri Department of Transportation said Thursday.

The graffiti on an electrical control box referenced Patriot Front, a group the Anti-Defamation League and Southern Poverty Law Center have designated a hate group. It appeared someone had added more messages on top of the original graffiti, including the word "fascists."

Members of the Patriot Front were accused of planning a riot at an Idaho pride parade earlier this month.

Jefferson City police notified MoDOT of the graffiti Wednesday and MoDOT had it removed that day, MoDOT spokesman Adam Pulley said. It wasn't clear whether the vandalism was being criminally investigated.

Pulley referred questions about investigations to law enforcement agencies. The Missouri State Highway Patrol, Cole County Sheriff's Office and Jefferson City Police Department have told ABC 17 News that they are not investigating the incident.
