Several agencies warn against spike in crime over the holidays

Many are busy buying gifts and and traveling in December, which leaves opportunities for people to take advantage of vulnerable situations.
Several agencies warn of car thefts, home burglary and package thefts over the holiday season.
According to a study by the National Council for Home Safety and Security, people carrying more cash and homes filled with gifts makes the holidays a ideal time for theft and crime.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, there number of burglaries across the state has been going down since 2014.
The Columbia Police Department previously provided the following tips to keep residences safe from burglars:
- Make sure all doors and window are closed and locked
- Put a medal rod or wooden dowel rod in the track of sliding glass doors
- Make sure to lock the door to an attached garage
- Close blinds and shades
- Use light and TV timers to create the illusion of being home
- Keep the surroundings of homes well-lit
- Never leave clues that the residents are away on a trip
- Don't leave a message on your answering machine saying you are out of town
- Keep shrubbery cut to reduce hiding spots for thieves
CPD said it also recommends photographing valuables to help police in their investigation and save time if your residence is burglarized.
The department also gave tips to about package thefts, as several shopper are going online for their holiday purchases
- Make sure to be in contact with the company that is delivering the package and have the delivery set up to where you have to sign for the package.
- Pick the package up from the delivery company
- Give the delivery information to a trusted friend or neighbor and have them either stay at the house or watch for the package.
- If a package is stolen off your doorstep, make sure to file a report with law enforcement.
