Boone County Sheriff’s Department proposes Narcan program for recently released inmates

A captain with the Boone County Sheriff’s Department is expected to discuss a proposal to the Boone County commissioners Tuesday morning related to inmates released with a higher chance of overdosing.

The proposal would create a program for inmates who are about to be released and are at risk of a drug overdose. The inmates would have a chance to take Narcan with them once they are released.

According to a study at a Washington correctional facility done by the National Library of Medicine, overdose is one of the leading causes of death of former inmates.

The study also showed that the risk of death in former inmates is significantly higher in the first two weeks of being released.

The Boone County Commission meeting is scheduled to start at 9:30 a.m. at the Boone County Government Center.
