What’s Going Around: Salmonella outbreak

Honey Smacks cereal and pre-cut melons are being recalled due to concerns over salmonella.

60 people in five states have gotten sick. Doctor Tara Flynn with MU Healthcare said salmonella comes from animal feces and can affect people differently.

“It depends on the dose and also the person’s immune system,” Flynn said. “There can be a couple of factors that may play a role in how sick you get and how quickly you can get sick.”

People typically start to see symptoms between 8 and 12 hours after coming into contact with it.

Children, elderly people, pregnant women and those with weakened immune systems are the most susceptible.

If symptoms are mild, people are encouraged to stay hydrated and rest. However, if a person develops a fever or has blood in their stool, they are urged to see a doctor.
