City leaders ponder code changes as crumbled wall becomes work site

A block of Madison St. is set to reopen for traffic Friday after eight days of closure caused by a wall that spontaneously crumbled last week.

ABC 17 News asked Jefferson City Mayor Carrie Tergin if the council is considering any change to building code following the partial collapse, considering the structure of the building was not inspected in 2013.

“We update the codes on a regular basis,” Tergin said. “Something that’s done today is different than it might’ve been in the past.”

Larry Burkhardt, the head of the building regulations department, said a change in building code is possible. “We learn from [building] failures,” Burkhardt said.

There is no discussion set for Monday’s city council meeting, but it could be added to future agendas.
