Jefferson City Public Schools looking at three potential boundary changes

Jefferson City Public Schools is looking at three potential boundary options. The boundary change will take effect in the Fall of 2019.

The district is holding a boundary line discussion at Lewis and Clark Middle School on June 13 from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm.

JCPS hopes to balance capacity levels at each school. Jefferson City parent, Amy Rogers, said she thinks boundary changes are important for the future of JCPS.

“If we need to add on more elementary schools, another middle school or even another high school, I think that’s the best plan for Jefferson City,” Rogers said.

Another goal of JCPS boundary change is to balance the number of students who receive a free or reduced lunch based on household income.

“If we can get the boundaries set where we aren’t having the boundaries drawn for the haves and the have-nots, I think that would be the best plan,” Rogers said.

All three boundary changes would move the Thorpe Gordon area to Lewis and Clark Middle School and Jefferson City High School. The Thorpe Gordon area is currently split. Some students attend LCMS/JCHS and others attend Thomas Jefferson Middle School and Capital City High School.

Boundary Option A would change elementary school lines for Cedar Hill Elementary and South Elementary School. It would move 40 students from Cedar Hill Elementary to South Elementary.

Option A also filters Cedar Hill Elementary School students into LCMS and JCHS. Students who attend South Elementary School would filter into TJMS and CCHS.

Boundary Option B would keep current Cedar Hill students at Cedar Hill. However, the student would split between both middle school and high schools.

Finally, Option C would keep current boundary lines. The Thorpe Gordon area would move to LCMS and JCHS.
